Beyond the Core

Title: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Author:
Robert Louis Stevenson
Age level: High School
Recommended by: Kim Deskin, Kirkland, Washington

Summary: Dr. Henry Jekyll, attempting to explore the "primitive duality of man," stumbles upon a potion which transforms him into Edward Hyde. Seduced by the magic he has created, Jekyll slips into a dependence on the alternate personality. Hyde, however, is the embodiment of evil, and Jekyll must resolve to defeat him. Events are witnessed and interpreted by various characters.

Teaching suggestions: The novel is an intriguing study of character voice, persona, and narrative as Stevenson includes several different narrators in his complete story. It also serves as a springboard for discussions of "dark" natures and of drug use.
