West. He was born in Alberta, Louisiana in 1908 (Discovering Authors CDROM). His family moved to Arkansas when his dad died. From an early age, he loved to read, and
his mother also loved to read. As a result, he always had enough reading materials available. He went to high school in Little Rock, and when he was seventeen, he wrote a
story and sent it to a magazine. He received one hundred dollars from that magazine (Discovering Authors CDROM).
His first full time job was printing names on Christmas cards. Later he became a linotype operator for the Harrison, Arkansas, Daily Times. After his job at the Daily Times, he went
to the Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway, Arkansas. During the summers he went on a couple of trips out west with one of his teachers in a Model T (Discovering Authors CDROM ).
He lived in Washington, D.C., during the Great Depression. There, he met one of his favorite authors, Sherwood Anderson. While he lived in Washington, D.C., he worked as a

, and many other books. He has written novels, nonfiction, and juvenile books. He won the Clarence Day Award from the American Library Association in 1971.
He also writes about many historical figures in his books (Discovering Authors CDROM). During the 1960s, he wrote eight more books, and in 1970, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
moved into the best seller list (Discovering Authors CDROM ). It's about the mistreatment of Native Americans by white settlers and the military during the expansion of
the West. It's unique because it's written from a Native American point of view. A recent publication is When the Century Was Young: A Writer's Notebook (1993).
Today, he still uses a manuscript typewriter (Author Chat Transcripts). He now lives in Little Rock, Arkansas at 7 Overlook Drive, Little Rock, AR, 72207 (Discovering Authors

Because of Dee Brown, many people probably view the American past very differently as they enjoy his historical books. II. Works Cited "Dee Brown." Author Chat Transcripts. 16 Jul 1998. This essay was submitted by a student of Suzanne Dilday, a teacher at Benton High School in Benton, Arkansas. |
