I. Biographical Information Charles Frazier was born in western North Carolina in 1950. Charles lives outside of Raleigh, North Carolina, on a small horse ranch with his wife and daughter. He went to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for his B.A. in 1973. Frazier then went to The University of South Carolina for his Ph.D. in 1986. He is married to a woman named Kathleen and has one child. Charles Frazier grew up in the hills of western North Carolina, which inspired him to write, Cold Mountain , which won a National Book Award. Charles has written, Cold Mountain, and grammar books. Cold Mountain was published in 1997. II. Connection to North Carolina Charles Frazier grew up in the mountains of North Carolina. He lived on the East Side of the Appalachians. It has a big difference in temperature compared to Charlotte. He grew up watching all the trees change color in the fall. III. About the Book Cold Mountain takes place in the mountains where Frazier grew up. It is about a wounded Confederate solider who travels across the Blue Ridge Mountain. He travels across the mountains to rejoin with his love, Ada. Ada is trying to keep the farm running, that she inherited from her dead father. The story takes place around the Civil War and was based on his Uncle Inman's journey. The story has a lot of action in it and it is easy to comprehend.
