I. Biography Jack R. Gage was born on January 13, 1899 in Worland, Wyoming. Gage attended the University of Wyoming. He completed his education by graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1924. He was the very first student of the University of Wyoming to hold any state elective office. Gage took over the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the 1934 to 1939 term. Gage was then later postmaster in Sheridan until he successfully ran for Secretary of State in the 1958 election. When Governor Hickey resigned to enter the United States Senate, Jack Gage served as Secretary of State. Becoming an acting governor on January 2,1961, Jack Gage served for the duration of Hickey's term. Governor Gage was a popular lecturer and author of several books in his time. Some of the different books that Jack Gage has written are: Ten Sleep and No Rest, Pack of Lies, A-Foot and Horseback, and The Johnson County War. On March 14, 1970, in Cheyenne, Wyoming Jack R. Gage passed away. Gage was 71 years old. Jack Gage lived a happy and peaceful life. His books are still being read and they are greatly appreciated. II.
