Tennessee Joseph Toy Howell, Sr. was born on May 26, 1853 in Richmond, Virginia. He was the son of Mr. Robert Boyte Crawford Howell and Mrs. Mary Ann Morton Toy Howell. His father was a Baptist minister. Howell's schooling was cut short by the Civil War. Joseph was taught at home by his father. Tavel, Eastman, and Howell Printing Company employed him. In 1868, Howell began his banking career as a runner for the Fourth National Bank. He became a Master Mason in 1876 and married Sue Grundy. In 1886, he was promoted to cashier. At the same time, he became Vice President and at the death of Mr. Samuel J. Keith became President. He married Mannie Lindsey in 1898. In 1908, he became the President of Carnegie Trust Company. At Fourth National Bank, in 1909, he became the first Vice President and Treasurer of TCRR. He became the President of the Cumberland Valley National Bank in 1911. That same year, he became the Vice President of Sequachie Coal and Iron Company. The Cumberland Valley merged with American National from 1921-1929 and he became the Vice President of the combined banks. On June 15, 1929, Howell died in Nashville. He was buried in Mt.
