I.  Biography

Alan Kesselheim was born in November 1952.  At the time of his birth, his parents were living in Turkey teaching at local schools.

Kesselheim moved permanently to Montana in 1982.  With his dad having roots in Montana he wanted to stay close.  He did live other places, but Montana is the place he liked the most.  He has been married for 15 years.  He met his wife in Montana, so yet another reason for staying.  He now has three children Eli who is 8, Sawyer is 7, and Ruby who is 5.

He has been working on being published since about 1981, writing mostly about the outdoors and adventures.  He has also written on environmental issues, historical events, and many other subjects.

Most of Kesselheim's hobbies center around canoeing, being in the outdoors, and, of course, writing.  He says, "I need to express myself.  Writing has always been a release for me- a way to grapple with emotions and feelings, to express things that are important to me, and most important, a way to express who I am in the world."

Kesselheim really got started in canoeing after college even though he canoed some as a child it never really stuck until then.  At this time, he became fascinated with the North Country, upper Canada, and the Northwest territories.  That is where some of his most memorable canoeing trips came from.

Kesselheim has had many canoeing trips and outdoor adventures to write about, but none measure up to the two trips he took to Northern Canada with his wife.  Both trips lasted a year.  They stayed in a log cabin in a very remote part of the wilderness.  During the second winter, his wife became pregnant.  With no way to get back to civilization they had to wait for spring thaw.  He now has a book out about the trips called Threading The Currents: A Paddlers Passion For Water .  This book also includes his first exposures to fast running water, and his brother's near disastrous capsize in a Northern Canadian lake.

Kesselheim now has many books and articles out.  He has published seven books including- Water And Sky:

Going Inside; Threading The Currents; Silhouette On A Wide Land; Trail Food- and a couple of others.  He now writes a regular column (Backcountry) for the Big Sky Journal.  He is a contributing editor to Canoe and Kayak magazine.  He also writes frequently for Backpacker magazine.

Kesselheim now resides in Bozeman, Montana, where he can write from the comfort of his home.  He says he never sees himself retiring.
