I. Biography Norman Mailer was born in 1923 in Long Branch, New Jersey. He grew up in Brooklyn and attended Harvard
University in 1939. During his attendance at the university Mailer became interested in writing. In 1944, Mailer was drafted into the Army and lived in Texas as part of the Twelfth
Armored Cavalry Regiment. Throughout the course of his life he has been married six times and has nine children. In addition to being a well-known writer, Mailer has had several other aspects to his professional
career. He appeared in several motion pictures, directed many plays. He was co-founder of the Village Voice and editor of a publication called Dissent. He was also president of PEN from 1984 to 1986.
II. Regional Influences Later in his life, Mailer moved to New York where he wrote some of his best works. He was a very active citizen of New York, and he won 6% of a primary to be mayor of New York.
