I. Biography Doug Marlette was born in 1949 and raised a North Carolina boy. Although he was originally from Greensboro, he was raised in Durham , North Carolina,
Laurel, Mississippi, and Sanford, Florida. He now lives between homes in New York and North Carolina. In addition to his 1989 Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning, he is the only cartoonist to
ever win the prestigious Nieman Fellowship Award at Harvard University. He is most famous for his cartoon work titled Kudzu and for his strictly editorial cartoons. He has worked for many newspapers and magazines including
The Charlotte Observer. He even created a musical based on his Kudzu characters. II. Literary Discussion Doug Marlette is well known for his editorial cartoons and comic strip work known as
Kudzu. An editorial cartoon is a drawing that expresses his opinion on a current day situation. A comic strip is a series of drawings that are supposed to make the reader laugh. His comic strip Kudzu
is follows the life of a boy from a small southern town named Bypass. It also includes people from the community of Bypass like The Reverend Will B. Dunn. Sometimes he even includes a talking parrot named Doris. Many times the story line in his comic strip Kudzu mixes an editorial comment with humor to make you laugh, too. III. North Carolina Ties
Doug Marlette was born in Greensboro, North Carolina. Greensboro is located in northern North Carolina near Winston-Salem and High Point. It is the main City of Guilford County
and all county business is done there. The population of Greensboro in 1994 was 196,167 people. Whites make up 63.9 % of the population while blacks make up 34%. Asians,
Pacific Islanders and Native Americans make up the balance. The city covers a land area of 79.6 square miles and its highest elevation is 837 feet above sea level. The primary
