I. Biography

Lee Smith was born in 1944 in a small town in Grundy, Virginia. The town was known for coal mining.  She currently lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Her Father operated a dime store, and it was in that store that Smith trained to become a writer.  Smith's mother was very involved in her life and was a story-telling influence in her life.
